Utah legal authorities on Tuesday filed charges against Tyler Robinson, the young adult alleged of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will seek the capital punishment should he is found guilty.

Charges and Case Circumstances

The exact accusations filed comprise premeditated killing, illegal use of a weapon, and witness tampering. Prosecutor Jeff Gray stated that factors elevating the charge involved the victim’s political expression and the presence of minors during the shooting.

“This is not a choice made lightly,” Gray stated. “And it is a decision was reached independently on the available evidence.”

Case Findings and Reported Motive

Investigators allege that Robinson instructed his housemate to erase incriminating text messages and not speak to police. According to reports, Robinson’s mother told investigators that her son had grown more political and had started leaning to the left, including advocacy for gay and trans rights.

The suspect was reportedly in a relationship with his roommate, who was transitioning genders.

The victim was shot during an appearance at Utah Valley University moments following a remark about trans people and mass shootings. Footage of the incident showed the attack.

Arrest and Proof

Robinson was taken into custody the following day after acquaintances recognized him from suspect photos. He turned himself in with the help of a associate who was a law enforcement official.

Before his surrender, Robinson reportedly admitted to the shooting in a post on Discord, stating: “Hey guys, it’s unfortunate, I was responsible at UVU that day.”

Investigators also reported that DNA matching Robinson was discovered on a towel placed on the rifle thought to have been used in the attack. The weapon was abandoned near the university.

Communications and Marked Ammunition

Additional proof included a digital communication from Robinson to his housemate that stated: “There was the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to do it.”

Officials also discovered bullet casings with engraved messages such as internet memes, gaming references, and lyrics from an anti-fascist song. A particular message said: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”
