This weekend, Sabalenka, the top-ranked woman, is set to face Nick Kyrgios in a Dubai exhibition promoted as a modern gender showdown. After weeks of promotion from both camps, it threatens to be one of the most pointless tennis events in recent memory.

Kyrgios's involvement is easy to understand. Struggling with a long-term physical decline over the last several seasons, he has played only a handful of official matches. At 30 years old, a consistent comeback to the top-level tour seems uncertain. His participation is evidently a financial opportunity to capitalize on his remaining fame.

Sabalenka's involvement, however, is significantly more disappointing. Coming off a career-best year, her choice lends unwarranted legitimacy to this enterprise. She and her representatives have defended the match as light entertainment that will grow the sport, drawing in casual viewers who might not engage with regular competition.

"The exhibition will elevate the women's game to a higher level," Sabalenka has claimed, even invoking the legendary 1973 match of Billie Jean King over Bobby Riggs.

A Step Backwards

Irrespective of the outcome, this showmatch represents a strategic error for Sabalenka and for the sport. It provides zero competitive insight. The physical disparity between the genders at the elite level is well-documented, and no audience will be convinced otherwise. The WTA Tour is itself a thrilling sport boasting some of the greatest competitors in the world. It needs more attention, but that focus should be on its real matches and dynamic personalities.

The worst scenario the sport needs is to reignite old arguments about equal prize money or the length of women's matches—discussions this event is certain to spark. The top ranking in women's tennis carries immense importance. Unfortunately, Sabalenka has used her platform to invite criticism for those who seek to diminish her own sport.

A Controversial Lead-Up

The lead-in to the match has been more problematic than expected. In a recent interview, Sabalenka ventured into the topic of transgender athletes in tennis, making headline-grabbing statements that opposed their inclusion. This shifted the focus from the exhibition itself.

Importantly, there are zero trans women playing on the women's professional circuit. A far more relevant issue is the persistent misogyny female players endure. Ironically, Sabalenka made these remarks while promoting Kyrgios, a figure who has pleaded guilty to assaulting a former partner, has been accused of sexist behavior toward other athletes, and has promoted content from notorious misogynists.

Cynical Commerce

There's no denying, the event has generated buzz. It will be televised by a major network and has earned Sabalenka a spot on a popular talk show. The large arena will probably be mostly full.

However, publicity is not inherently positive. This spectacle is a cynical exercise to generate headlines for monetary benefit. It is a product of its time, akin to influencer fights where notoriety trumps sporting merit. No serious analyst believes such stunts are healthy for their respective sports. The two players are represented by the same agency, which will benefit financially from the arrangement.

A Better Alternative

The 2025 season was a standout for the WTA in years, thanks to the duels between Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek and supported by a deep field of stars like Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and others. They delivered thrilling matches and genuine competition.

Ultimately, the most effective method to appreciate the excellence of the sport is to view women's tennis. Not contrived exhibitions that cheapen the same game they claim to promote.
