The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25k award cash to the MVT, which works to preserve the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the prize on October 16 as his latest record the album was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has opted to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the area, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians such as the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped venues that were confronting imminent closure due to issues caused by flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The notion that money from concerts in major spaces supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Last week, the trust announced it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in the city were acquired under the community ownership program, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the buildings.
