Intense Winds Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the region.

Intense winds reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled agencies to call off in excess of 100 aircraft departures, as reported by local media.

The gales are influencing the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, according to the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have released infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in core zones including these major districts.

Residents have been encouraged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Extensive Damage and Crisis Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting homes predominantly in the South Island, although officials say that power was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was swept into moving cars on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a incident that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Air travel to and from the metropolis have been halted because of the weather, while certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have declared a crisis declaration, to assist disaster response efforts.

Work Stoppages Amid Harsh Weather

These intense gusts on today occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been called a "major walkout", requesting better pay and working conditions.

But the extreme weather has pressured them to modify various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Like conditions are affecting the neighboring country, causing a heatwave to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have issued fire bans for apprehension regarding bushfires.
