Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate observing their advancement".
Summers, who formerly led Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it accepted his determination to resign.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the directors," the company stated.
Congressional Action
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on recently to approve a measure that would require the US justice department to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will subsequently head to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. He has said he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

A collection of Epstein-related emails released by the legislative panel last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to link the academic to notable international personalities.

After the messages were made available with the wider community, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain corresponding with the financier".
He further stated that he desired "to restore confidence and repair connections with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from five years and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was not connected with the group.
He became part of the board of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its CEO the company leader.
